Stay healthy on holiday with these travel tips

travel vaccinations

By Alwyn Fortune, RPS Wales Policy and Engagement Lead

Going on holiday is exciting, but preparing in advance can help you avoid health problems while abroad. Whether you’re managing a pre-existing condition, supporting family members with health conditions or simple looking to stay well, planning ahead ensures a smoother and safer trip. Here’s what you should do before you go and what to keep in mind whilst you’re away.

Check if you need travel vaccinations

Some destinations require specific vaccinations to protect against diseases not commonly found in the UK. Visit www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk to check whether your destination has vaccination requirements. It’s best to get vaccinated 6-8 weeks before travel. Your pharmacist can advise you on what’s necessary.

Organise travel insurance

Make sure your travel insurance covers any pre-existing medical conditions and includes medical expenses, particularly if you are travelling outside Europe. Some policies may require you to declare your condition in advance.

Check medicine regulation for your destination

Different countries have different rules regarding medicines. Check the www.gov.uk website for country specific information and ensure you can legally carry your medication. Some medicines that are available over the counter in the UK may be restricted abroad.

Pack your medicines safely

    • Make sure you carry enough medication for your entire trip, plus any extra in case of delays.
    • Keep medicines in their original packaging with pharmacy labels intact.
    • Carry them in your hand luggage, along with a copy of your prescription on paper or on your phone.
    • If your medication is a controlled substance, you may need a letter from your doctor to travel with it.

Know your medication details

Learn the generic names of your medicines, as brand names can differ abroad. Keep a written record or photo of your prescription and dosage instructions. Check the expiry date to ensure medicines will last your entire trip and ask your pharmacist about proper storage, especially if travelling to a hot or humid destination, and travelling with medicines that are normally kept in the fridge.

Preparing for your journey

  • Find healthcare services before you go. Research local pharmacies and healthcare facilities at your destination in case you need additional medicines or advice.
  • Overcome language barriers by using translation apps or writing down essential medical phrases in the local language.
  • Pack a basic first aid kit. Include plasters, pain relief, antihistamines, anti-diarrhoea tablets and rehydration salts.
  • Take steps to prevent illness. Stay hydrated, get plenty of rest, and practise good hygiene, such as regular handwashing or using hand sanitiser in public places.

By planning ahead and following these tips, you can reduce the risk of illness while travelling. Your pharmacist is happy to help and can provide travel health advice whether you need vaccinations, guidance on your medication or general tips on staying well abroad.
