Professor Amira Guirguis
RPS Chief Scientist
Professor Amira Guirguis is an accomplished pharmacist with a proven track record spanning research, academia, public health, and policy development.
Her core expertise lies in substance misuse and new psychoactive substances (NPS), where she brings a distinctive combination of hands-on experience in drug detection, addiction prescribing, and policy formulation. She serves on the UK Government’s Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) and the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)’s Fitness to Practise Committee. Additionally, she has acted as an expert witness in court, delivering scientific evidence to inform sentencing decisions.
She played a pivotal role in establishing a new school of pharmacy in Wales, shaping the future of pharmacy education and cultivating leadership among emerging healthcare professionals. As a supervisor of PhD candidates and professional doctorates, she actively contributes to academic excellence and research innovation.
In her professional leadership roles, she also chair the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS)’s Science & Research Committee and serves on the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI)’s Accreditation Panel. Amira has co-authored over 100 publications, including peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and drug monographs.
Her research interests bridge clinical pharmacy, pharmacovigilance, netnography, and analytical chemistry, with a strong commitment to advancing both innovative teaching and research development.
