Antimalarials (P medicines)

Pharmacy guide
This pharmacy guide will help you and your pharmacy teams supply antimalarials over the counter (OTC) for the prevention of malaria quickly and safely, in line with the marketing authorisation.
It covers all the considerations before supply as well as a summary of the product information, information on the condition, other treatment options, malaria prevention measures, signs and symptoms of malaria infection, action required if infection is suspected and signposting to resources.
This guide focuses on atovaquone 250 mg/proguanil hydrochloride 100 mg tablets, which is licensed as a pharmacy (P) medicine and available OTC as Maloff Protect 250 mg/100 mg tablets.
We will not focus on chloroquine phosphate 250 mg (Avloclor 250 mg) tablets, which is also available OTC but rarely used due to the development of resistance.
