By Daniela Zanni, RPS mentee

When I joined the RPS mentoring programme, I was at a point in my career where I felt ready to grow but unsure how to take that next step. I had experience under my belt, ambition to do more, and a growing sense that I needed direction. Mentoring offered me something I hadn’t realised I was missing — structured support, a safe space to reflect, and someone to challenge my thinking in the best possible way.
Finding the right support
I signed up for the programme hoping to get career clarity, build confidence, and develop both personally and professionally. I was matched with a mentor who had a wealth of experience and a calm, reflective approach. We connected regularly — usually once a month — and discussed everything from specific workplace challenges to longer-term goals. These conversations weren’t just helpful; they were transformative. My mentor never gave me direct answers but instead asked thoughtful questions that encouraged me to reflect deeply.
Tools, techniques and shifts in mindset
Throughout our sessions, my mentor introduced me to tools like Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats analysis (SWOT) analysis, goal-setting frameworks, and reflective practice exercises. But more importantly, he modelled a mindset of growth and curiosity. I realised mentoring wasn’t about someone giving you a checklist for success — it was about developing your own ability to think strategically, overcome self-doubt, and navigate uncertainty with more confidence.
Real progress, real impact
As a result of mentoring, I felt more confident in articulating my career goals and more proactive in seeking out opportunities aligned with them. I stepped up to take on new challenges and started to view my professional journey less as a linear path and more as a series of informed, empowered decisions. Mentoring helped me see the bigger picture — and my place in it.
Why you should consider mentoring
Mentoring is not just for people who feel lost — it’s for anyone who wants to grow with purpose. Whether you're early in your career or looking to take it in a new direction, a mentor can offer perspective, challenge your assumptions, and support you in becoming the best version of yourself.
The RPS mentoring programme gave me more than career guidance — it gave me clarity, confidence, and the momentum to move forward. I’d encourage anyone considering it to take that first step. It could be the most rewarding decision you make this year.
