The RPS has joined other members of the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change to call on the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to withdraw the decision to approve new licences for oil and gas in the North Sea.

Signed by RPS President, Professor Claire Anderson, the letter highlights that health workers are already witnessing the effects of climate change-induced health issues such as high temperatures, extreme weather, and pollution.

The letter cites that over 3000 excess deaths occurred during 2022 heatwaves and projects potential heat-related deaths to rise significantly by 2050.

The letter emphasises that climate change ranks as a top concern for UK adults and asserts that investing in oil and gas contradicts the country's past leadership in climate change mitigation.

The health leaders propose transitioning to renewable energy sources, particularly onshore wind and solar, to combat climate change effectively. They suggest focusing on retrofitting, insulation, and clean heat generation for buildings to reduce energy consumption, create jobs, improve health, and alleviate poverty.

The letter also argues against expanding domestic gas and oil production due to its slow impact and negative consequences on climate and ecology.
